What conditions are treated by the Surgery Center?
Surgical care focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions that cannot be effectively managed with medication alone or require surgical intervention.
The role of a surgeon is not simply to perform an operation, but to determine whether surgery is truly necessary through accurate diagnosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

At UN Animal Medical Center, we treat a wide range of surgical conditions, including patellar luxation, cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture, fractures, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), tumors, gallbladder disease, urinary tract disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, pyometra, thoracic diseases, abdominal diseases, and traumatic injuries.
Is surgery always necessary? Are there non-surgical treatment options?
Not every surgical condition requires an operation.

Depending on the diagnosis and severity, some pets recover well with conservative treatment such as medication, weight management, activity modification, or rehabilitation therapy.
On the other hand, conditions such as severely displaced fractures, complete CCL rupture, tumors affecting organ function, or gallbladder disease are often best treated with surgery.

The goal of surgical care is not simply to perform surgery, but to achieve the best possible outcome for your pet.
A thorough evaluation helps determine objectively whether surgery or non-surgical treatment is the most appropriate option.

Using advanced diagnostic imaging such as CT, MRI, and ultrasound, we accurately evaluate each condition and perform a wide range of advanced procedures—from minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to orthopedic, neurosurgical, thoracic, and soft tissue surgery.

Our surgeons work closely with internal medicine specialists, diagnostic imaging, anesthesia, and intensive care teams to provide a one-stop surgical care system covering diagnosis, surgery, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and follow-up care.
Our goal is not to perform more surgeries, but to perform the right surgery safely and precisely when it is truly needed.
What are the advantages of laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique performed through small incisions using a high-definition camera and specialized surgical instruments.

The magnified surgical view allows for greater precision while minimizing tissue damage. Smaller incisions often result in less pain, reduced bleeding, and faster recovery.
They also lower the risk of infection and make postoperative care easier for pet owners.
Laparoscopic procedures are used for various conditions, including spay surgery, gallbladder disease, liver and kidney biopsies, and preventive gastropexy. The most appropriate surgical method is selected based on each pet's condition.
What diagnostic tests are performed before surgery?
Accurately identifying the location and severity of a condition is essential when planning surgical treatment.
Evaluations may include physical examination, blood tests, X-rays, ultrasound, CT, MRI, and when necessary, tissue biopsy or cytology.
These tests help determine whether surgery is necessary, which surgical approach is most appropriate, and what outcome can be expected, allowing us to create the most suitable treatment plan for your pet.
Is general anesthesia safe?
General anesthesia is an essential part of safe surgery, and every anesthetic plan is tailored to the individual patient.
Before surgery, we evaluate anesthetic risk through blood tests and other examinations such as chest radiographs, ECG, or echocardiography when indicated. Age, breed, underlying medical conditions, and the type of surgery are all carefully considered.
During surgery, heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiration, body temperature, and ETCO₂ are continuously monitored by a dedicated anesthesia team.

At UN Animal Medical Center, we carefully manage every stage—from pre-anesthetic evaluation through anesthesia and recovery—to provide the safest possible surgical environment.
Can senior dogs and cats safely undergo surgery?
Yes. Age alone is not the deciding factor when considering surgery.
In fact, many conditions that require surgery—such as tumors, gallbladder disease, pyometra, and intervertebral disc disease—are more common in senior pets.

Before surgery, we carefully evaluate anesthetic safety through blood work, cardiac assessment, chest radiographs, and other necessary tests. The surgical plan is tailored to your pet's overall health.
What matters most is not age, but your pet's current health and the nature of the disease.
What should pet owners pay the most attention to during recovery after surgery?
Recovery is just as important as the surgery itself.
It is essential to administer prescribed medications as directed, limit activity for the recommended period, and provide adequate rest.
Following orthopedic or abdominal surgery, activities such as jumping, climbing stairs, and vigorous exercise should be restricted during recovery.

Pets should also wear an Elizabethan collar or recovery suit to prevent licking the incision. If you notice loss of appetite, excessive swelling, bleeding, discharge, or difficulty walking, please contact the hospital promptly.
Regular follow-up examinations help ensure a safe and successful recovery.
Do you perform emergency surgery?
Yes. UN Animal Medical Center provides 24/7 emergency medical and surgical care, 365 days a year.

Emergencies such as traffic injuries, gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), pyometra, urinary obstruction, internal bleeding, intestinal obstruction, and chest trauma require immediate diagnosis and surgical intervention.
Emergency patients are rapidly evaluated using blood tests and diagnostic imaging—including X-rays, ultrasound, and CT—and can receive emergency surgery and intensive care without delay when needed.
Our team is always prepared to respond quickly and systematically to life-threatening emergencies, providing the best possible care when every minute matters.

    • The pet owner or an authorized representative must accompany your pet.
    • Please allow enough time for postoperative recovery before discharge.
